Women in Music:Those Who Write,Those Who PlayTom Quick's Monday Night Concert features Global Cornucopia of Sound
CKWR FM's Women in Music showcases female composers and instrumentalists from Prague's Vitezslava Kapralova to New York's Wu Han.
Tom Quick, is a classical music aficionado who has been hosting and producing radio since 1975 beginning at Brisbane, Australia’s public broadcasting network 4MBS, now at Waterloo Ontario’s community radio station CKWR FM. Quick has been broadcasting his classical music program Monday Night Concert for nine years playing and promoting new classcial music while including his preferred composers Gustav Mahler and Sir Edgar Elgar. Tom Quick " One of my great all time favourites is Elgar’s Orotorio of a Dream which is set to a poem by Cardinal John Newman. It’s based on a man who falls asleep briefly and dreams that he dies and the second part is the journey of the soul. It’s got everything you need and toward the end it has this wonderful contralto solo called The Angel’s Farewell where the angel sends the soul on its last journey to meet its maker." Quick has over 7000 CDS in his home library and the idea for Women in Music came to him from surfing the internet. Soon Quick was inundated with CDs spanning the globe from Argentina to Hong Kong. Tom Quick: “I was surfing through the internet and found a website called Beauty in Music and it is all women composers and instrumentalists - anything from a top notch composer to a tambourine player. That sparked my imagination to do a two-hour feature program called Women in Music with all music either composed or performed by women, and I thought if I could get this going, I will do it once a month. Suite 101: How has the response been? Tom Quick: "It has become so popular and there is such a great demand that I am actually doing this program twice a month. I have received 17 CDs from a composer in Vienna. I got another CD from an American clarinettist who is now living in Hong Kong. A number of websites have picked up the show including Toronto's Kapralova Society. (Vitezslava) Kapralova died at the age of 23 in Paris in 1942. That website contacted the International Alliance for Women in Music (which now lists Quick's show.) IAWM has sent me contacts from women composers and instrumentalists all over the world." Suite 101: You also feature interviews with the composers? Tom Quick - "Monday Nov 17 marked my 20th program in this series which means I have done forty hours of Women in Music. Mary Lou Schagena from preceding CKWR program Monday Night with the Arts conducts interviews with the composers and then I will do a feature on that composer which follows Mary Lou’s show." Some of Schagena's guests have included Japanese piano virtuoso Wu Han, and Canadian violist Linda Melsted. Monday Night with the Arts is heard weekly from 7:30 to 8:30. Tom Quick broadcasts Women in Music Monday nights twice a month from 9 to 11 pm on CKWR FM. 98.5. For more info about Women in Music go to Tom's website
